The fall garden seeds are in the ground. My new neighbor and I spent Saturday planting the fall garden. We've planted tomato, basil, wonder bell pepper and onion. We will know in about 10-12 days what germinates and how things might look. This time we made trenches to aid in water after things start growing. In the Spring garden the planter soil was flat. One of the things I learned in the Spring is that the Basil helps keep the bugs from the tomato plants. I have really enjoyed the basil and it has outlasted the tomato. I still have my TAM mild jalapeno and my Habanero/pimento pepper. The TAM mild produced some fruit back in July while I was out of town, but has more fruit on it. I have yet to get any habanero fruit.
In the Spring garden we attempted to grow a watermelon in a container. It has been our experience that this will not work. The vine started to get one melon but it kind of rotted or fell off or something, I'm not sure what happened. It seems the vines need to spread out and attach to the ground. I think there's something philosophical about that statement, but I'll lead you to ponder than on your own. We have replanted the watermelon with the other plants in the planter boxes and will see how things go.
My new neighbor and I seem to be doing better about splitting the work. It has been more of a collabroative approach and I feel more a part of this garden than in the past.
Classes start in a week. I'll have 2 classes (7 credit), garden duty and two part time jobs. Think I'll start washing dishes at the local coffee shop in exchange for caffeine!!
